We are pleased to invite you to join the Spring 2024 cohort of the Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy in celebrating the launch of the students' creative advocacy zine!

Student-made zines will be available for all attendees. There will also be eco-centric crafts and activities, as well delicious snacks from local community-focused restaurants. 

**Important reminder: For safety reasons, all guests should wear closed-toe shoes and necessary sun protection. Water and snacks will be provided.)

Earth Day

Spend your day caring for and learning about our planet this earth day at Ocean View Growing Grounds!

We’ll observe soil microorganisms under the microscope, learn about native pollinators and composting, and craft! Activities are for all ages!

A huge shout out to San Diego’s Science Fleet Center for lending us the microscopes for the day to look at the microorganisims that make life on earth possible!

No RSVP necessary, see you there!

Chef Christina Ng will guide you through the process of creating your own delicious pickled treats by demonstrating both a quick pickling method and a shelf stable pickling method. From cucumbers to carrots to citrus, discover the secrets to making the perfect pickles. This in-person event is a fantastic opportunity to pick up a new skill and meet fellow food enthusiasts. Don't miss out on this fun and educational experience!

Know what you want to pickle? Bring your veggies! Have your own jars? Bring them! We'll show you how to sterilize your jars to make them pickle-ready.

YEJAA's Autumn Advocacy Art Fair

Join us for an afternoon of creative advocacy, celebration and community hosted by the Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy and the Global ARC! The students from the Fall cohort 2023 have harnessed their talents in creative arts to develop moving and poignant imagery to draw attention to the climate crisis, environmental injustice, and the need for urgent action in our communities.

In addition to art displays across a range of mediums - print, collage, paint, linocuts, screen-printing, photography, and more - there will be DIY craft activities, light refreshments, and art available for purchase by donation.

This community event aims to have a meaningful and respectful dialogue among parents, students, residents, School districts, educators, and decisionmakers in a facilitated discussion setting designed to generate a common statement and collective recommendations to the SDUSD 2023-2024 LCAP. LCFF, and a commitment to the action! The themes for this year's dialogue are to highlight shared education successes in pre-and postpandemic, learning loss due to the pandemic, and socio-emotional wellbeing for both students and Educators. *(LCAP Local Control Accountability Plan, (LCFF) Local Control Funding Formula)

Harvest Festival 2023

It is almost the time of the year where we come together as a community for our annual Harvest Festival! Join us at Ocean View Growng Grounds on Nov. 4 to celebrate this year's harvest alongside friends and family.

We will have games, arts & crafts including pumpkin painting, and a Young Environmental Scientist Passport for kids to explore our garden!
Whether you are a gardener, an aspiring gardener or someone who appreciates the art of gardening, we'll have free seeds, herbs, and greens for you to take home!
Our partners at Family Health Center, Inner City Athletic Program, and The Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy's ambassadors will be joining us.
Make sure to bring all your gardening questions! Our very own agriculture specialists will be more than happy to answer them!

2nd Annual Wise Elders Changemaker Awards

The Global Action Research Center’s President/CEO, Paul L Watson Jr., and Associate Executive Director, William T Oswald will receive the 2023 Wise Elder Changemaker Award from University of California, San Diego. They will receive this award in acknowledgement of the Global ARC’s 10 years of social change work within San Diego.

The event will be taking place online through zoom.

These young scholars held their event at the Ocean View Growing Grounds, using the various stations to provide a fun way for the community to get together and learn and talk about climate and environmental justice and mental health!

Organic Fertilizing Wokshop

Join us at Ocean View Growing Grounds to learn about how we fertilize our garden via foliage fertilizing to increase yield, overall fruit sweetness, and nutrition density of each fruit.

We encourage you to bring seeds, tree branch cuttings about a width of a pencil, and harvest to share with other attendees.

Free seeds will be offered too!

Our workshop will be lead by our own urban agricultural specialist.

Harvest Festival

This year’s annual Harvest Festival was another fantastic success! Community members and partners got together at Ocean View Growing Grounds to celebrate our harvest and learn more about our environmental justice learning hub.

We had activities like Pumpkin painting, a Young Environmental Scientist Passport for kids to learn about different ways to combat climate change, and fun games brought by The Inner City Athletic Program (ICAP)!
Guides on propagating, growing, and seed-saving native plants were provided to local growers and many gardening related questions were answered!

Summer Pruning Workshop

Join us at the Ocean View Growing Grounds for a free educational session on the importance of pruning fruit trees during the summer. The workshop will be lead by organic farmer and sustainable consultant, Scott Murray, who will share his knowledge on pruning and its benefits to increasing fruit yield, fruit tree health, and disease prevention in the summer.

The Future is In Our Hands

City Heights Youth for Change will precent their process on their training about the knowledge of climate change and the messaging of taking care of the planet because no one else will. The youth will have a dialogue with the community about the importance of taking care of our world with the message of “TIME IS RUNNING OUT”

The mural unveiling will take place at 12pm at 4089 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, CA 92105
