The Block Party 2023 - Recap
The Block Party, presented by The Young Environmental Justice Advocates and in partnership with UCSD’s Climate Justice Action Research Scholars!
On Saturday May 20th at Ocean View Growing Grounds our high school advocates alongisde University scholars hosted this event to provide a fun way for the community to get together, obtain resources, learn, and talk about climate and environmental jusitce and mental health.
As per usual, The Global ARC’s events aim to connect community members with one another in a fun, free, and educational manner. With the guidance of our Program Director Raphael Lagoc and UCSD Professor Leslie Lewis (leader of UCSD’s Climate Justice Action Research Scholars) these young scholars successfully collaborated and planned out an event.
Planning Session #1 at UCSD
Planning Session #2 at OVGG
After much planning, hard work, and determination the Block Party flourished successfully! With Ocean View Growing Grounds opening its doors to the many visitors from our community, families, friends, teachers, and more!
Arts and crafts with a sustainable twist!
One of the main concepts The Block Party was highlighting to all guests was Sustainability. Many students from both the Academy and the University class brought glass jars, pots, and encouraged all guests to bring old glass jars to paint and design beautiful and fun pots for their plants! After painting them they had the opportunity to grab some plants from our garden. Over at the Succulent Garden and right next to our new mini Library, guests had a fun time designing their own bookmarks! Not only were they using adorable stamps, stickers, and colorful markers, guests were able to use leaves and old fruits as stamps! What better way to promote the connection of literacy and the soothing feeling of nature!
TALK ABOUT SAN DIEGO
This station was lead by the students of the Climate Justice Action Research Scholars. Guests were encouraed to talk about the current state of San Diego including topics of Climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice.
MENTAL HEALTH
The Succulent Garden is Ocean View Growing Grounds’ designted meditation garden where visitors can sit and relax. This spot was perfect for the resources that the YEJA students collected and shared with visitors. Guests had the chance to sit and relax whilst reading a book or talking with friends, family, and fellow guests.
Giveaways!
A key part of the event were the giveways included in every station! As highlighted above, many guests artistically designed their pots and bookmarks. We also had a raffle with prizes from our staff and partners, screen printing a design prepared by one of our Young Environmental Justice Advocates on tote bags and shirts that guests brought, various flyers on mental health tips, locations on health resources, small bags of lavendar and more!
