Seed Saving

Seed Sovereignty

Just 4 corporations currently control 2/3 of the world's seeds. It is essential that we save and share seeds to ensure that our communities have control over our food supply, how our food is produced, and to broaden access to seeds. Monsanto/Bayer, one of these major seed corporations, produces GMO patented seeds, which means farmers cannot save and replant them. This forces farmers to have to buy their seeds every year, making them dependent on these corporations. Their seeds reduce crop diversity too, making these crops vulnerable to pests and climate change. This is why it is essential to have community led seed saving efforts that prioritize people over profit!

Climate Change Adaptation

In the face of climate change, we are saving seeds to be more adapted to higher heat and drought, to ensure we have seeds that will continue to produce nutritious food with a changing climate. Ask us about our slow bolt cilantro seeds!

Agricultural Heritage

Saving seeds of cultural significance is a major goal of OVGG. Many varieties of crops that are central to agricultural heritage are difficult to find in American grocery stores. Growing your own and saving seeds to share with others is a way to preserve agricultural heritage.
